glasses on a bookshelf - from our trip to nashville in early december

C  U  R  R  E  N  T  L  Y  .  .  .

R E A D I N G Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone. I'm pretty sure I'm going to finish it this week, & then I will work on finishing Harry Potter & History. I'm trying to read two books per month this year.
W R I T I N G in each component of my Organizational Suite, which I plan to share more about this week.
L I S T E N I N G to hum & whir of the ceiling fan. We've had quite the lazy morning, & I am typing this as I sit against a pile of pillows in bed.
T H I N K I N G that I'm ready to get on the ball this week! Due to the go-go-go nature of our 17-day trip home to Shreveport, I gave myself this past week off to relax & gear up for a productive rest-of-January. Well, as it turns out, a little too much of a good thing turns it into a bad thing. I feel like the laziest person on Earth. To top it all off, I also have been eating whatever I want & not working out. This has illuminated for me that there is definitely a balance to be sought out - living this way is not fun. I can't wait to get back into a healthy, productive routine.
S M E L L I N G nothing, really. When I finish this post, though, we are heading up to Sawmill for brunch, & ever since we decided that, I can practically taste the hashbrown casserole.
W I S H I N G I had been more productive last week. Though I did get some things done, I certainly can't claim too much. That feels like such a waste of time to me.
H O P I N G there is plenty of coffee at Sawmill - I feel like I could use a vat of the stuff today.
W E A R I N G scrub pants & neon pink Bayou State Therapy shirt.
L O V I  N G watching Say Yes to the Dress recently. Justin has been watching it with me, & they added a whole bunch of new episodes to Netflix. Cue lack of productivity last week.
W A N T I N G to choose a new series to dive into with Justin after we finish SYTTD. Any suggestions? Shows we've loved in the past include Nip/Tuck, The Office, Mad Men, Dawson's Creek...
N E E D I N G to go eat, to pick up cleaning supplies, to clean the house, to read, to write, to make productive plans for the week...
F E E L I N G quite hungry, which is amazing, since I haven't really allowed myself to feel that way all week.

"a beautiful, writerly home."

"I had created a beautiful, writerly home, full of paper and books..."
- Anne Lamott, Real Simple, December 2013

I am a bad blogger.

You see, I have not yet posted one, single, solitary photo from our October 2012 honeymoon. I have drafted posts, yes. I have edited photos, yes. I have hemmed & I have definitely hawed. But something never felt quite right.

Until today.

But let's go back to a couple weeks ago, first. On a plane from Atlanta, Georgia, to Monroe, Louisiana, I sat nestled in my tiny chair, reading the December 2013 issue of Real Simple magazine. And when I read the quote above, by Anne Lamott, I stopped in my tracks, fished my highlighter out of my carry on, & proceeded to revel in this quote's majesty. It's a simple sentiment, I know, but one that I hope to be able to speak aloud one day, in regard to our own home. And though I was anxious to share this quote with you all, I had to wait, because I wanted a photo to accompany the quote, & I'm sure any bloggers out there will be able to relate.

The photos you see above were taken in a filled-to-the-brim, books-scattered-all-over-the-floor bookshop in Portland, Maine. I still remember it like it was yesterday, which is lucky, since as I said, I have made practically no moves to document this trip as of yet. It was very chilly as we walked the quaint downtown, which actually has one of those flat buildings that New York City has [in which the Starbucks is located, no less], & we spied a book shop, the name of which is escaping me at the moment, & we went in. And as we made our way through the mountains upon mountains of books, one at the top of the pile in a back corner caught my eye.

It was The White Castle of Louisiana, by M. R. Ailenroc. A book written by one of the daughters of John Hampden Randolph, the man who built Nottoway Plantation. The very place we had just gotten married the week before.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. How had this book even gotten here? The only place I had ever seen it sold was the Nottoway gift shop. And now, many, many miles away - in Maine, for goodness sake - we happen to stumble upon a copy of this Louisiana born-and-bred book, written by someone who lived in the very house where we just got married?

My mother bought this book on one of our many trips to Nottoway, & unless I'm remembering incorrectly, it was in the year 1997. I have since stolen this copy from her, always intending to read it [though I still haven't just yet]. Despite this fact, I quickly snatched that copy up in the Portland book shop, holding it close to my heart, exclaiming to Justin that I couldn't believe the treasure we had found. That book now sits on a bookshelf in our house, waiting to be read. Its presence is a reminder to me that nothing is done without meaning, that happy mistakes like that aren't random - there is a thread holding all of our lives together, breathing in purpose, familiarity, goodness, & truth.

in 2014, i resolve to...

a little peek at what i'm calling my 2014 Organizational Suite

Go to Church.
This is something that is important to both Justin & myself. I want to find a Church that we enjoy, feel comfortable at, & walk away from feeling inspired to live our best lives.

Do Yoga & Pilates each week.
If you've never felt that easier-to-breathe feeling that happens after doing a yoga or pilates class/DVD, you need to try it. Not only are these practices good for your body, I truly believe they are also good for your soul. For pilates, I love Blogilates. I'm still in the market for a good yoga program, but I'm going to research that tomorrow I think.

Ease into a Paleo lifestyle.
I've been reading up on the health benefits of this type of diet & lifestyle, & I'm eager to try it. For the majority of 2013, I wrestled with acne-prone skin. In actuality, I don't think my skin has been completely clear in over a year & a half, & I don't know why. Granted, I should probably get myself to the dermatologist, which I fully intend to do, but I think cutting dairy out of my diet would do nothing but help. Where have I turned to for Paleo inspiration? Here & here. I'm not going to pretend this isn't also about weight loss. In short, I'm tired of fighting with my body. I'm in a much better place than I've been in years past, but I'm ready to make a permanent, positive change to my lifestyle.

Run.
It is a big goal of mine to run a half marathon in 2014. I've already scoped out the training plan I'd like to follow, & I think I'm going to start it next week. Due to some big changes coming up, I don't know exactly when or where I'll be running this half marathon, but I'm just going to start training for it & go with the flow. There are changes coming to my blog that will reflect my running journey, so be on the lookout for that in the next few days or so.

Consistently take care of myself.
This sounds weird, I know. But sometimes I really slack on taking care of myself. I can't tell you how much I've improved on my before-bed routine. Switching to showering at night was a huge help, & I greatly look forward to crawling into bed clean each night. But there are weeks where I don't fix my hair, & it can be found hanging out as a curly mess on my head. This isn't conducive to my feeling especially wonderful, & it has been known to launch me into some particularly prickly ruts. I won't go much further into this, but I will say that I often shortchange myself when it comes to this category, & I plan to make a big change regarding this in the coming year.

Allow myself to evolve.
I can't tell you how much I over think whether or not I should allow myself to change. I have all of these weird notions in my head about who exactly I'm trying to be at any given moment, & to tell you the truth, I feel like that's really unhealthy. This year, I resolve to let go of those pre-conceived notions & simply allow myself to evolve into my best self. Sounds easy enough, right?

Immerse myself in music & make playlists.
Now, this one I'm really excited about. I go through phases with music: sometimes I'm ravenously hanging by its thread, waiting for something to come out that's going to change my life, be my theme song, make me cry; other times, I'm all, meh... whatev. This year, I want to be the former. I've written before about how music can take me away to another place & time, & in 2014, I want that. I want to, in the future, hear this year's songs & be immediately transported back to the year I turned twenty-eight.

Develop my hobbies: knitting, crocheting, metal-stamping, stationery-printing, & monogramming.
I keep putting these things off. In fact, at the beginning of pretty much every year since I learned to knit (thanks, Diane!) in 2011, I've always wanted to make Christmas gifts for people. And I have done that a couple of times, but I want to make this more of a thing in the coming years, & there's no time to start like the present.

Maintain my composition notebook diaries & planners.
As you can see from the photo above, I plan to use a lot of different types of planners/diaries this year - 5, to be exact. I'm planning to write a post about my Organizational Suite for this year, so be on the lookout for that. I'm really excited about this system, & I really hope it sticks!

Send correspondence.
I love handwritten letters, & I want to give that joy to others. This will also help with one of my other resolutions, which I'll discuss later in this list.

Work on the Treasure Catalogue with my Mom.
Right now, this project is still in the discussion phase, since I didn't get to work on it during our trip to Shreveport like I had planned. I'm really excited about this, though!

Read.
I've set a Goodreads goal of 24 books this year, & I'm excited to reach that goal. Ever since my reading hiatus, my passion for books has been thrown into sharp relief. I now plan to always make time for reading, no matter how full my schedule gets.

Cook.
If I'm going to try to ease into a Paleo lifestyle, this is going to be necessary. To tell you the truth, though I don't cook often, when I do, it brings me great joy.

Go out with Justin.
Living so far from family & friends gives us constant permission to eat takeout on the couch in front of the TV. This year, I want us to focus more on celebrating our relationship & taking the time to go out on dates. I think this will be fun for both of us, & I know we'll be seeing a lot of movies!

Collect gift inspiration throughout the year.
I'm already ahead of the game on this resolution, & I'm excited to keep it up. Gift-giving should bring about feelings of joy, not stress. I'm opting for joy in each gift I give this year, & putting a stop to procrastination is the key.

Finish Christmas shopping the second week of December.
Going hand-in-hand with the list item right above, I plan to have all the shopping done by this time. The ultimate goal here is to collect gifts throughout the year, possibly even wrapping them ahead of time [and labeling them so I remember what they are, of course!].

Plan ahead.
I could go on & on about this one & why it's important to me this year, but I'm just going to let it be self-explanatory.

Nurture my relationships - especially family.
This one may be far down on the list, but its importance is colossal to me in this new year. As I discussed in the "Go out with Justin" portion of this list, living far away from friends & family allows this sort of pass, which I easily fall into, but do not like the results of. It's so easy for me to fold in on myself, relish being at a distance & uninvolved... but ultimately, this is not the way I want to be, or the kind of friend I wish to be. Being introverted at my core, socializing & keeping up sometimes drains me, even though I wish to be different. My social skills - namely, being more outgoing & friendly - is way up there on my goals for this year.

Work on - in a BIG way - handling stress & anxiety.
I've grown in leaps & bounds in this category where air travel is concerned. And I owe a great deal of that ease to the discovery of Brave Flyer. And though I've begun overcoming this particular hurdle, it seems to have given way to some pretty extreme & unpredictable highway anxiety. Though I've unlocked a major key to what triggers my anxiety - caffeine - there are still times when I can't prevent it or make it go away. I'm going to work on that this year, & hopefully, by this time next year, I'll be able to write about how I'm more at ease.

What do you resolve to do in this brand new year that lies before us?
Please do share - I'd love to hear your goals!

checking in from wilmington.

Hello, blog! And hello, blog friends! It feels like it's been forever, even though I did do a bit of blogging while we were away in Shreveport for the holidays.

As you can see from the title up there, we are back in Wilmington & back to the daily grind. Today, I have been feasting on vitamins & guzzling water in an effort to feel a little healthier. After a week of being very sick, & a week of being a little bit sick, there are not enough words to describe how much better I feel. I'd like to keep it that way.

With Christmas, New Years in Dallas, a wedding, & an entire afternoon spent traveling yesterday behind us, it should come as no surprise to you all that I slept until the ding of a text message woke me promptly at noon today. Now you can find me on the couch, eating Cheetos & typing with orange fingers.

I just wanted to pop in & say hi & let you know that I'm excited about the things I plan to write about this week: resolutions for two thousand fourteen, a few bits of inspiration I've found while reading recently, & - I'm sure - a couple more rambly little posts just like this one. I'll also be emerging back into the world of social media this week, so if you've said hello to me via those avenues recently, I will be responding to you all soon. It pains me to say that I was a horrible social media-er during my trip. Alas, I was living in the moment, as they say.

Happy Monday!

the sunday currently, volume 68.

this has long been one of my favorite Christmas decorations. bear with me as i hold onto the holiday season for just a little while longer.

Hello! And Happy First-Sunday-Currently-Post-of-2014 to you all! I am drafting this post way far in advance, because a certain someone's wedding festivities are kicking off tonight [Thursday], & I don't know if I'll have a spare minute to pop onto my blog & type this out in the coming days, before we board our flight back to Wilmington.

Our trip home to Shreveport has been such a whirlwind: I've barely been able to keep up with everything we've done so far on this trip. We have seen so many people, gone so many places, & made so many memories. Truth be told, I'm not ready for it to be over, but life in Wilmington is calling, & we've got to make our way back & start 2014 off right, with hard work.

R E A D I N G my two Harry Potter books. This is what dreams are made of, folks. I've been dreaming of this reading-freedom since August, & it's finally here to stay for a few months! Also, as today is travel day, I'm hoping to get a lot of reading done!
W R I T I N G lists & plans & dreams for two thousand fourteen. I also hope to be scribbling away in my composition book as we make our way back to Wilmington today.
L I S T E N I N G to my Christmas playlist for just a little while longer. I'll make a new one in a week or so. One of my resolutions - which I plan to share next week - is to make & enjoy more playlists this year.
T H I N K I N G that it's time to get centered & focused & hone in on what is really important to me this year.
S M E L L I N G like Burberry Brit, I hope. I've returned to this signature scent of sorts lately.
W I S H I N G that time could slow down a bit. Any advice on how to make this happen? How to add more hours in the day? More minutes to the house? I'm serious.
H O P I N G  I get some very important mail soon. Whatever the outcome, I'm just ready to know.
W E A R I N G what I'm sure will be comfy clothes for all the travel we'll be doing today.
L O V I  N G our families, our friends, our pets. And missing them already. I can't tell you how wonderful it's been to be around everyone & see everyone & just be back here where everyone is. I especially loved our New Years Eve celebration in Dallas.
W A N T I N G to really get my life in order over the next couple of weeks.
N E E D I N G very much the same thing as I'm wanting. I've been feeling a little chaotic inside, & I need to get back to feeling steady & balanced. Easier said than done, for sure.
F E E L I N G ... well, as I mentioned, a little bit off-balance. But this is nothing that can't be fixed with a little bit of introspection & meditating on my life. I feel like I've been using a lot of lofty words to describe this, but it's quite simple at its core: I just need to spend time getting back into the groove of my life.
C L I C K I N G the Eighty Twenty. I've really been loving some of their articles, & I think this publication will help me a lot with what I've mentioned in this post: getting centered, getting my life together, figuring everything out as we make our way through the first month of two thousand fourteen.

where i've been this year.
it's a brand new year.

Thursday, January 2, 2014

it's a brand new year.

Yesterday evening, I woke up from a midday nap feeling really inspired.

That doesn't often happen. Usually, midday naps yield a sort of panicked urgency when I wake up. Things like, What am I supposed to be doing? or What did I miss? or What TIME IS IT? often flash through my head when I finally do open my eyes back up. But yesterday evening, thankfully - oh, so thankfully - I didn't feel that pit-in-my-stomach feeling coming through as much.

When I woke up yesterday evening, though , I did feel that weird, nagging feeling I sometimes feel after a big event, though. I felt nostalgia - already, one day later - for the New Years Eve we had only just spent in Dallas. Surrounded by friends, dancing, singing... & all in one of my very favorite cities. I missed it all so very much, & the fact that it wasn't even twenty-four hours out of the picture just seemed to make the memory more tantalizing. It was still so close, yet horribly far at the same time.

But, like I said, I did wake up feeling inspired. A few weeks ago, I tweeted about how I had tapped out a resolutions list for 2014 while elliptical-ing in the hotel gym on our last night in Nashville. And really, I had planned on that being the only mention of the collection of goals I've assembled for this entire year that lays out before us. But something in the way I felt when I woke up from that nap told me otherwise. Something in the way I felt told me, share.

So, one day, probably next week when we're settling back into our Wilmington routine, I will share. Because sharing is caring. And, after all, it's a brand new year, filled with opportunities to turn over brand new leaves. And I don't know about you, but I plan to do a lot of that very thing this year.

where i've been this year.

As 2013 is coming to a close, I can't help but reflect back on all the wonderful, exciting trips Justin & I have been able to take this year. I've been so lucky to have traveled to many, many new places, & I thought I would share exactly where I've been this year with you below. Any posts associated with our travels will be linked as well. Enjoy!

where i've been in 2013

Oh, & please note: not all states are placed in their geographically correct positions.

In January, we traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana for Laura & Jonathan's engagement. Then, we drove a moving truck with a lot of furniture in it back to Wilmington. There was a very quick stop over in Dallas, & I think that counts.

In February, we visited Charleston, South Carolina, & we took TONS of photos. This post has links to all of the posts from that particular trip.

In March, we visited & fell in love with Pinehurst, North Carolina. Justin attended a Gastroenterology conference. I walked around & took photos. We also trekked across North Carolina, visiting Winston-Salem, Hickory, Asheboro, & Charlotte, during a birthday road trip for Justin.

While I was visiting Shreveport for a month in May, I got to see my mom get inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, attend Lindsey's Bachelorette Party at Jazz Fest, attend Kelsey's graduation, celebrate Mother's Day, & stand in Lindsey's Wedding.

For the 4th of July holiday, we visited Savannah, Georgia.

At the very end of August/very beginning of September, Justin went to play in a golf tournament with his friend Tim, & I met them in Raleigh that weekend to see Louisiana Tech play. I also visited ECU in Greenville with Rebekah.

In October, we went back to Charleston to celebrate our first anniversary.

In November, I got to visit NYC for the first time, in honor of Laura's Bachelorette Party.

At the beginning of December, we finally got to cross Nashville off our to-travel-to list. And we stopped to eat in Asheville on the way there. And then, on the twenty-first, we flew in for a very Shreveport Christmas, arriving in Monroe for a Christmas celebration with Justin's side of the family. And on the day this post goes up, we will be headed to Dallas for a New Year's celebration, & later this week, we will be participating in Laura's wedding festivities!

We took a few road trips over to Myrtle Beach throughout the year also, mainly just to shop at their outlet malls.

I'm thankful to have visited all of these places, but most of all, I am thankful for a husband who is willing & able to send me to all of these places. I can't wait to see what kind of travel 2014 has in store!

here we are eating at one of our favorite travel finds: Loveless Cafe in Nashville

the sunday currently, volume 67.

Merry Post-Christmas & Happy-Almost-New-Year! I'm sorry for the late post today, folks. Since we have arrived in Shreveport, I've been sick, & we have been trying to get together with people & do everything we want to do while we're here. Luckily, I'm feeling much more myself today. I hope you all are having a lovely holiday, surrounded by family & friends.

R E A D I N G Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone, as well as Harry Potter & History, which my sister got me for Christmas.
W R I T I N G nothing at all in my Composition books since I arrived here in Shreveport. We've been busy!
L I S T E N I N G to Justin chatting with me as I type this post out.
T H I N K I N G that I'm really glad that my illness is almost gone. I've been sick since we arrived in Shreveport.
S M E L L I N G nothing at the moment.
W I S H I N G it was still Christmas, & that 17 days in Shreveport was more like two months.
H O P I N G  I'm completely better by tomorrow.
W E A R I N G a sad face that Christmas is over. Luckily, my parents leave their Christmas tree up until the first of the year.
L O V I  N G that we are in Shreveport!
W A N T I N G coffee.
N E E D I N G a shower.

Justin had to turn on the air conditioner again last night.  It's October 26 - doesn't that mean the heater can stay on? Doesn't...
