the world at large.

a late spring, downtown wilmington scene

The other day, as I was walking through Hugh MacRae Park, listening to the Band of Horses Pandora station, a song came on that I hadn't listened to in a while.

It was The World at Large, by Modest Mouse, & as its notes poured over me, I was transported. Suddenly, it was twilight on an achingly late summer day. All the windows were down, the music up, the jarring smell of air freshener mingling with cigarettes. We were speeding along i49, the wind air-drying my damp, curly hair. I had that overly-tired feeling you get after you swim all day, & my skin had probably seen more sun than it should have that day. There was an almost tangible feeling of change in the air: we were about to close the door on high school forever, & the incalculable experience of college was on its way in.

And years later, I'm able to realize that that moment had more to do with myself singularly than it ever had to do with who I shared it with [a distinction it isn't easy to make from close up]. It had to do with the energy within myself, with my summer soul, with the promise that lie ahead. It had to do with the fluidity of space & time, with the transformative power of music.

So even today, when I hear the melody, the rhythmic drum beats, the ebb & flow of those familiar notes, I recognize my old self in my new self. I feel at home within myself. I am happy & whole & at peace.

Love this, as well as the new design! I had a "moment" yesterday with a song that came up on Spotify and instantly drew me back to high school, I think it's awesome.

Love it. It's amazing how a song can send you right back to a particular moment and a particular feeling in time.

It's one of my favorite things about music. It's so crazy to me that hearing a song can make me feel feelings that I felt YEARS ago.

Thank you about my design - I'm really happy with it! :)

Ooooh, what song was it, if you don't mind sharing?

I am always changing mine, I love playing around with HTML!

The song was The Raconteurs "Steady as she goes!"

Beautiful post! There are certain songs that take me back to certain times in my life, too. Also, I love that feeling after you swim for a long time. It's such a good tired feeling.

There is nothing better than post-swim tiredness & hunger. I plan on getting back into swimming once we've moved to Greenville, & I can't wait, for those exact reasons.

The beauty of music lies in its ability to create moments in time & memories that we'll never forget. Music is everything! :)

I love that song!

And I'm trying to learn more HTML - I kind of want to take a class someday!

the back and forth.

Justin had to turn on the air conditioner again last night.  It's October 26 - doesn't that mean the heater can stay on? Doesn't...
